Charter for compassion

By recognizing that the Golden Rule is fundamental to all world religions, the Charter for Compassion can inspire people to think differently about religion. This Charter is being created in a collaborative project by people from all over the world. It will be completed in 2009. Use this site to offer language you'd like to see included. Or inspire others by sharing your own story of compassion.

No nonprofit, corporation or government agency is an island…Imagine the power and possibilities when visionary nonprofits are joined at the table by socially responsible corporate and public sector leaders.  These relationships are at the heart of successful collaborations.  These partnerships raise more money and awareness for the non-profits, gain market share and credibility for the corporations, and fulfill states’ needs by meeting government agencies’ missions.  A slightly modified John F. Kennedy quote really defines this process “ask not what the funder can do for you but what you can do for the funder”.  Where the three sectors converge the future lies.

This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.

I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community, and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can.   I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live.  I rejoice in life for its own sake.

Life is no brief candle to me; it is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.

- George Bernard Shaw
